BRIEF EXPOSITION OF OTITE ANAM

OTITE ANAM Igbo folklore is of the opinion that Yam was a gift from Chukwu – God Almighty to Eze Nri as reward for his solving the riddle of the Igbo market days. Yam, variously regarded as the king of crops or the symbol of wealth in Igbo cosmology occupies an enviable place in Igbo socio-cultural as well as economic life. Thus in the Anambra River basin areas, the highest title a man can aspire to take is Oba – Yam king. Indeed, so central is yam to Igbo socio-cultural life that almost all Igbo communities celebrate the new yam festival. In Anam, the new yam festival is called Otite and it is usually celebrated in the month of August every year. It is during the Otite that Anamites thank their Gods for granting them a bountiful harvest. Otite is usually fixed by the ruling age grade in Anam – Okpokolo and it is they who meet to examine the Igbo lunar calendar so as to ensure that Otite holds on the sacred market day of Eke.  Every titled man is expected to sacrif...

ANAM PEOPLE AND DEVELOPMENT

Development has been a word that has been accorded different meaning and interpretation amongst people of diverse backgrounds. In Economics view it entails a continuous or sustained growth where the latter involves a positive change in the level of production of goods and services in a an economy. It can be also seen as "Qualitative measure of progress in an economy . It refers to development and adoption of new technologies , transition from agriculture based to industry based economy, and general improvement in living standards ." To the ordinary man on the street it means nothing than good roads, education for all, more jobs for the unemployed, low prices of goods and raw materials, constant electricity, healthy water supply etc. To the ordinary Anamite, it is good roads to link the rural communities in the area and expose the area to merchants who would be interested in the agricultural produce of the people, electricity(even if not constant), good drinking wate...

WHO WILL BELL THE CAT?

As the 2011 elections draws near, one cannot but be marvelled at the scramble for elective positions in Nigeria. We would soon be hearing about agendas-be it seven point, 12 point or even 100 point agenda as is the case with the country. Anambra North senatorial zone and indeed Anambra West local government has suffered tremendously in the hands of unscrupulous elements whom we erroneously or never voted in the first place. We would soon be approached like in the past to give them support and after elections they turn us into slaves and set their dogs on us as we would never set eyes on them again. They would only wave to us from inside their bullet-proof cars. They don't KNOW YOU after the elections. Avoid them now as possible as you can.
